Sustainable Business Practices

The Womens Center of America is a grassroots center that assists women and girls in the areas of personal counseling, career services, financial information and workshops, divorce support and more. The Center was established in 2000 and as a relatively new non-profit organization, they rely heavily on donations and, as a result, nearly everything in their offices is on its second life. Reused computers, furniture, books, magazines, reference materials and paper are all utilized at the Center. In-house documents are currently printed on paper that was left over from a previous tenant and volunteers use the reverse side of paper from old bound manuals as notebooks. Aside from reusing paper, the Center also recycles it, along with many other materials. In order to help close the recycling loop, paper, calculator tape, envelopes, file folders, desktop organizers, garbage bags and hand towels are all purchased containing recycled content materials. Donated items from charitable organizations are also utilized by the Center for reuse. Clothes get a new life for women going out to interviews, pies from Grand Traverse Pie Company and cookies from Great Harvest Bread Company's leftover baking find their way to clients, businesses supply the Center with envelopes and stationary, and the Center turns in toner cartridges in exchange for recycled paper. The Womens Center of America has incorporated their recycling program during new employee orientation. Each employee is given a statement describing how and when to recycle. These efforts prove the Centers commitment to the environment and the Waste Knot Program for years to come.
