The Washtenaw County Conservation District (CD) is a local agency of state government assisting landowners with the conservation and management of the natural resources of Washtenaw County. Established in 1948, the Washtenaw County CD is under the direction of a five-member locally elected board of directors. Services of the CD are available to all residents of Washtenaw County, and include: soils information & interpretations; erosion control recommendations; Forester to assist with woodland management; Groundwater Stewardship Program to assist with farmstead and household assessments for groundwater protection; educational presentations on groundwater for schools and community groups.
The District also offers a periodic newsletter, "Conservation Update"; an extensive Internet web site at: www.washtenawcd.org; spring and fall tree & native plant sales for reforestation, windbreaks/screens, wildlife habitat and erosion control; and books for bird, tree, shrub & wildflower identification; developing wildlife habitat and nesting boxes; the Washtenaw County Soil Survey; Washtenaw County Plat Book and Soil Test Boxes.
Sustainable Practices
As a local unit of state government involved with the conservation and management of natural resources in Washtenaw County, the Washtenaw County Conservation District recycles office paper, cardboard, printer/copier toner cartridges, and other products; prints as many documents as possible two-sided; prints draft and in-office use documents on the backs of previously used paper; and works to be energy and waste conscious in how facilities and resources are used.
