Sustainable Business Practices

Sweetwaters Caf s a favorite of coffeehouse lovers near its locations in Ann Arbor and Saline. The staff of 25 at the W. Washington location are actively involved in the cafs recycling and waste reduction program, which is written in a formal statement defining preferred waste practices. New staff are introduced to the program and current staff continue to reduce, reuse, and recycle. In addition to reducing paper waste by encouraging use of email and offering hand driers in the caf restrooms, Sweetwaters reuses folders, envelopes, boxes, and packing material, and scrap paper is cut up to make notepads. The Caf is able to reduce garbage collection through these initiatives as well as recycling white paper, cardboard, containers, and packaging materials and milk jugs. Sweetwaters also offers customers who reuse cups a discount for other drinks. In addition to waste reduction, Sweetwaters has made efforts to conserve energy by purchasing ENERGY STAR-rated office equipment, placing external timers on lights, and employing night setbacks.
