Sustainable Business Practices

Smith Group is an organization of creative professionals committed to achieving design excellence and environmental sustainability in diverse project solutions. They offer services in Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional planning, Urban Design, Civil Engineering, and Historic Preservation. Though their services are inherently environmentally responsible, they also make an effort to reduce their impact on the environment in the way they run their business. Smith Group reduces waste by encouraging double-sided printing and electronic communications, as well as reusing many materials such as folders, mugs, boxes, and packing materials. They recycle paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, cans, and laptop and cell phone batteries. In addition, they help close the recycling loop by buying recycled content products in their office, such as copier paper, file folders, and other paper products. In addition to donating old office equipment to schools, universities, and non-profit organizations, Smith Group conserves energy by replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs and by employing night setbacks when their office is unoccupied. They have continued to improve their recycling efforts by no longer receiving paper hard copies of faxes and instead receive PDF files as email attachments.
