Sustainable Practices

The Saline District Library has had an active recycling program for many years, collecting items ranging from magazines and newspapers to paperback books and cardboard. Packaging materials are separated and given to a local packaging store for reuse, colored paper is saved and used in craft activities during story times and almost 300 fluorescent tubes were recycled last year. In addition, the library paid to recycle 114 CDs, 309 floppy disks, and 56 cassette tapes. The use of paper among staff is limited by the increased usage of e-mail, message routing and a central bulletin board. When the new library site was built and furnished, shelving from the previous library building was rebuilt and utilized and outdated equipment was given away to a library in South Carolina. All library tables were resurfaced and also reused in the new facility.
