Over the past few years, Print-Tech, a commercial printing company has taken many steps to becoming more environmentally friendly. The company has completely eliminated its use of film processing equipment and darkroom chemicals in favor of a computer-to-plate device which allows them to create all of their printing plates with less waste. In addition, the company has demonstrated its commitment to reducing waste by recycling over 65 tons of scrap paper and over 2 tons of scrap aluminum in 2004. The company recycles many other products, including wood debris, computers, cardboard and plastic. Print-Tech also reuses many products, such as folders, packing materials, mugs and utensils to further reduce its waste output. The company also purchases many products that are made with recycled materials and engages in waste saving practices throughout its office. Print-Tech selects one employee to oversee its recycling program and informs and updates new and existing employees about its program. Employees are rewarded for participating in the waste reduction program. Print-Tech has also made great strides in the area of energy conservation by replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, purchasing and using ENERGY STAR rated office equipment and placing external lights on timers. The company also performs routine preventative maintenance on major equipment, further demonstrating its dedication to becoming an environmentally sustainable business.
