Sustainable Business Practices

NSF International tests and certifies equipment, processes and materials relating to food, water and the environment. As a leader in developing standards to protect public health and the environment, they also look internally at their own practices to protect these goals and standards. NSF created an Environmental Focus Group that focuses on identifying opportunities within the company for reducing, reusing and recycling. The company has donated a number of their used computers and monitors to charities or employees, has created an employee battery and thermometer recycling program and has implemented an analytical method change in the chemistry lab that has reduced the use of solvents by approximately 80-90%. The lab has also switched from gaseous nitrogen to liquid nitrogen to avoid purchasing large quantities of gaseous cylinders. Their chemical inventory system can now be access by the entire laboratory staff, facilitating an easier exchange of chemicals among labs and reducing the purchase of excess materials. Energy conservation is another goal of NSF International. This year, the organization has started to use a vendor which provides a small quantity of renewable energy in hopes that this quantity will increase.
