Sustainable Business Practices

The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan is a non-profit organization whose mission is to prevent and eliminate diseases of the kidney and urinary tract, to enhance the quality of life for people with kidney disease through education, services, advocacy and research, and to increase organ donation. The Foundation conducts a program called Kidney Cars which is dedicated to reducing waste, reusing and recycling. This program tows unwanted cars free of charge and auctions them off to dealers. If the vehicle is in poor condition, the fluids, metal parts and other remaining parts are reclaimed and sold. This annual program reduces the amount of abandoned and unwanted cars that create a potential danger to people and the environment. In addition to recycling paper, packaging materials, and computers, the Foundation reuses boxes, mugs/utensils, and paper to decrease their contribution to the waste stream. An employee is designated to oversee the waste reduction and recycling activities in the office to ensure that the program runs smoothly.
