McNaughton & Gunn is a book manufacturer located in Saline that has made a commitment to promote cooperation and coordination between industry, government and the public towards the shared goal of waste reduction and recycling. To that end, the company has implemented a wide variety of waste reduction and recycling initiatives. In 2002, they purchased 552,738 lbs of recycled content papers and their staff recycles c ans, packaging materials, scrap metal, glass, and computers. Reusable oil soaking socks have replaced their disposable counterpart. Their film processors were remodeled to reduce the amount of wash water used and to increase the amount of silver recovered. A Cyclone Scrap Removal System is used to collect paper waste and trimmings throughout the plant so that this debris can be transported to a paper mill for recycling. Black ink is purchased in bulk containers and these containers are sent back to the manufacturer for refilling when empty. McNaughton & Gunn has also worked with its vending machine service provider to allow employees to use reusable mugs in the coffee vending machine. Recently, they converted 3 acres of mowed lawn into a natural habitat to further preserve environmental quality on the site. These, among other initiatives, are reasons why McNaughton & Gunn have received this and other waste reduction honors over the years.
