Sustainable Business Practices
The First Unitarian Universalist Church is a non-creedal, multi-faith, liberal church that reaches out to the community by playing a central role in the Interfaith Hospitality Network, helping with the Hunger Coalition food program, and supporting a sanctuary family from El Salvador. A principal of the church and religion is respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. This is accomplished thought sermons and education programs for 700 + members. Their Green Sanctuary Committee is devoted to activities that improve the environment in the community, such as encouraging recycling and using recycled content cups for Sunday service. Also the committee has hired architects to design their new wing so that it meets LEED environmental building standards. The committee has also prohibited the use of toxic herbicides and pesticides on church grounds. The Church uses a variety of tactics to reduce, reuse, and recycling the waste they generate. The Church administration educates employees as well as the congregation about the recycling program and encourages participation through verbal praise and by having a designated employee that oversees the program in the office.
