Sustainable Business Practices

SGI Publications, publisher of Current magazine and the Annual Ann Arbor Guide, has been an icon in Ann Arbor for nearly 27 years. The company recycles paper goods and containers, as well as batteries and toner cartridges. Employees are introduced to the recycling program when they are hired, and a staff member has been designated to oversee and encourage employees to continue participating in the recycling program. In addition to encouraging reduction of paper use through electronic communications, SGI reuses one-sided paper as scratch paper and minimizes waste in the kitchen by reusing durable kitchenware and plastic food containers. Envelopes, boxes, and packing materials are also reused. Recycling is not the only environmental choice they have made. Purified water is provided to staff members, reducing the need for bottled water, and energy is conserved by insulating windows, employing night setbacks, and replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs.
