Sustainable Business Practices

As a public transportation provider and community enhancer, the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) works hard to minimize waste. Their Facilities Maintenance staff oversees the recycling efforts in both the management and maintenance areas. Offices are equipped with paper recycling boxes and central bins are located in common areas. On top of recycling more common items, AATA recycles toner cartridges, parts, cleaning solvents, tires, used oil filters, lead acid batteries, scrap metal, and water from the bus washer. AATA reduces waste by reusing a variety of materials including paper, toner cartridges, and waste oil. Five central bulletin boards are located throughout the facility to share information using minimal amounts of paper, and publications are routed instead of having multiple copies made of them. For these and other environmental efforts, the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority was awarded the 2000 Environmental Excellence Award, the highest environmental honor bestowed by Washtenaw County Government. AATA is also committed to energy efficiency as they have installed VAV systems in heating and cooling equipment, enacted employee night setbacks when the building is unoccupied, replaced old fluorescent figures with newer bulbs and ballasts and installed variable frequency drives wherever possible.
