Sustainable Practices

The Ann Arbor District Library provides services to the community beyond book lending by offering several programs that encourage recycling, waste reduction, and other environmentally friendly practices. In addition to being green in the office in waste reduction and energy conservation, AADL coordinates a program to donate returnable bottles and cans to Washtenaw Literacy, a non-profit adult reading organization. AADL also leads by example through its Malletts Creek Branch Library. Malletts Creek Branch was created with the intention of serving as an example of sustainable design. The building has an innovative heating and cooling system, including sedum roofs with monitors. These monitors detect solar heat and control cooling by opening the roof pallets while heating is done through the floor to conserve energy. Recycled wood was used for the beams and the floor is made from cork, a renewable resource. Mallets Creek Branch has truly lived up to its written principles, that the Library will teach, by example, responsible coexistence with the natural environment.
