Business Overview
REI is a national
outdoor retail co-op dedicated to inspiring, educating and outfitting
its
members and the community for a lifetime of outdoor adventure
and stewardship.
Founded in 1938 by a group of Pacific Northwest mountaineers
seeking quality
equipment, REI operates retail stores nationwide, two online
stores http://www.rei.com
and http://www.REI-OUTLET.com and an adventure travel company, REI
Adventures.
REI offers products from all of the top brands for camping,
climbing, cycling, fitness,
hiking, paddling, snow sports and travel, including its own
line of award-winning outdoor
gear and apparel. While anyone may join or shop at REI, members
pay a one-time $20
fee and receive a share in the companys profits through an
annual member refund based
on their purchases. As an active supporter of the communities
in which it does business,
REI is committed to promoting environmental stewardship and
increasing access to
outdoor recreation through education, volunteerism, gear
donations and financial
contributions.
Sustainable Practices
The following is a list of REI Ann Arbors waste reduction efforts:
-
Composting (April November)
-
Recycling of paper, cardboard, #1 & #2 plastics, glass, metal, plastic packing materials, and light bulbs.
-
Light fixtures throughout the store are energy efficient.
-
Skylights in the building offer natural light and work with a control system that automatically dims or turns off fluorescent lights during the day to save energy.
-
We have a Green Team committee that looks for other ways to reduce our carbon footprint.
-
We offer a subsidy for employees that use public transportation.
-
We offer rewards to employees that bike commute, walk to work, use public transportation, or ride share.
In addition, we promote stewardship by working with local organizations on service projects such as invasive species pulls, trail cleanups, and river cleanups. These projects are for customers and employees. We also offer the free PEAK (Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids) Program which teaches children the 7 principles of Leave No Trace.
