Sustainable Practices

Forsythe Middle School reduces garbage collection by encouraging the use of double-sided printing and electronic communication. In addition to recycling paper, cardboard, cans and glass containers, the school offers a recycling course that provides students with hands-on recycling experience. During the 2003 fall semester, students in the course saved 209 trees, 4,666 gallons of oil, 37 cubic yards of landfill space, 49,120 Kilowatts of energy, and 85,960 gallons of water through recycling. More recently, from September 2005 through April 2006, the students recycled 11,093 containers, 4,474 cardboard boxes, 1,712 paper lunch bags, 12,941 styrofoam plates and more than 6,000 lbs of paper from the classrooms. In addition to educating students about waste reduction, new employees are introduced to the schools waste reduction program and are encouraged to recycle paper from the classrooms.
