Business Overview

Our love affair with beer began in 1991 with our first batch of homebrew. Eventually the brewing operation took over the kitchen and basement and we decided it was time to look for larger digs. So with the help of family and friends, we opened the Arbor Brewing Company Pub and Eatery in July 1995.

Over the years, our community and our staff have changed as have our own interests, focus and values. And along the way, Arbor Brewing Company has evolved to reflect those changes. When we became vegetarians, we tripled our selection of vegetarian items. When we fell in love with Belgian ales, we built a beer cellar and created a line of barrel-aged, bottle conditioned Belgian-style ales.

We have always felt a strong responsibility to support the community we serve through volunteerism, philanthropy, fair labor practices and environmentally sustainable business practices. We are also committed to buying as many goods and services as possible from local, independent businesses that share our values.

But most importantly, it has always been our goal to create a comfortable and inviting neighborhood pub. A place to cheer on our favorite teams and our favorite candidates. A place to come together to share our joys and sorrows. A place where you know you can always find a cold beer and a warm smile. We thank you for your patronage and hope you will enjoy your time with us.

Sustainable Business Practices

The Arbor Brewing Company is a downtown Ann Arbor restaurant that employs approximately 50 people. Employees are expected to follow the companys mandatory recycling policy. Participation in the companys waste reduction efforts is considered as evaluation criteria for merit increases. The Arbor Brewing Company donates the brewers spent grain to local farmers who then use it as feed for livestock. Laminated menus are no longer used, instead a slipcover-style menu is used which allows the restaurant to remove pages when they become outdated and replace them with updated copies. These outdated pages are then turned into scratch pads for the wait staff. The restaurants decorations and napkin rings come from the Scrap Box and furniture is purchased from Kiwanis or the Recycle Ann Arbor ReUse Center. The Arbor Brewing Company was participating in Ann Arbors restaurant composting pilot program where their vegetative waste was collected and composted at the citys compost site. They look forward to this successful program starting up again. Arbor Brewing Company is also committed to energy conservation as they use fluorescent light bulbs, place external lights on timers and perform preventative maintenance on equipment.
