Each year, Meals on Wheels programs throughout Washtenaw County deliver warm festive Thanksgiving meals to those seniors who are unable to leave their homes.

“Many seniors rely on these meals for both the food and the opportunity to see a friendly face.  For some, this is the only human interaction they have all day.  This is especially important on holidays when family might be too far away to visit,” says Andrea Plevek, Human Services Manager with the Washtenaw County Office of Community and Economic Development.

This year, 276 seniors received Thanksgiving meals delivered to their homes on Thanksgiving Day throughout Washtenaw County.  In Dexter, meals were delivered to 25 seniors on the day after Thanksgiving as part of a special community program called Seniors Get Stuffed.  Washtenaw County saw an overall increase in the number of seniors requesting a Thanksgiving Day meal compared with 2012; in some part of the county, there was a 20% increase in meals requested.  Meals were delivered by Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels, Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels, Chelsea Senior Center, and Dexter Senior Center.

Trinh Pifer, the Executive Director of Chelsea Senior Center was one of two volunteers who delivered meals to seniors in Chelsea.  She says, “my daughters (13 and 17 years old) loved delivering the meals on Thanksgiving Day. It made them feel so thankful that they could come say "Hello" and bring a hot meal to a senior on Thanksgiving. One of the seniors couldn't come to open the door, so we brought in her meal and she blew kisses to them -- It was very sweet.”

Holiday meals will also be delivered to homebound seniors this year on Christmas Day and New Years Day.  Funding for the Holiday Meals on Wheels Program comes from the Area Agency on Aging 1-B.  The program is administered by Washtenaw County Office of Community and Economic Development and Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels.  To volunteer for Meals on Wheels programs at any time during the year, please call:
