Community Corrections

Community Corrections is a division of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office and is responsible for administration of jail and prison diversion programs funded under Public Act 511 (PA511). Community Corrections programs and services can be utilized at all stages of the criminal justice process; from pre-trial supervised release programs, community based supervsion programs, jail based programs, residential and non-residential treatment programs for probationers and parolees. Many of the programs are designed to link with one another to provide graduated increases and decreases in the level of treatment or control of an offender in the community.  For more information on the various programs, select from the list:

In 1988, the Michigan Legislature enacted Public Act 511 (PA511 of 1988), commonly referred to as the "Community Corrections Act", in response to prison and jail crowding. The act enabled local advisory boards to design, implement and evaluate corrections programs for eligible offenders who would otherwise be incarcerated in state prisons or local jails.

The Office of Community Corrections, within the Department of Corrections, awards annual grant funding in support of programs to communities based on a comprehensive plan detailing local trends and needs. The Act stipulates that the advisory board responsible for the plan include policy makers and key representatives from the criminal justice system, human services network, and the community at large. The Act requires annual approval of the plan by the legislative arm of the sponsoring communities. The Washtenaw County/City of Ann Arbor Community Corrections program is funded primarily through a grant from the State of Michigan, however local county funds are also used to support the operation of the community corrections programs.
