What is considered a deck?
An exterior floor system supported on at least two opposing sides by an adjoining structure and/or posts, piers, or other independent supports.
What are the requirements for building a deck?
Decks must be constructed according to Washtenaw County Deck Standards.
Decks are required to support a 40 pound live load.
Materials used for the construction of decks are to be of natural durable or treated lumber.
Fasteners used in treated material shall be galvanized, plated or other corrosion resistant material.
Decks elevated 30" or more require guards minimum 36" above deck surface and nosing of treads in accordance with The State Building Code.
Three or more risers require graspable handrails.
Where supported by attachment to an exterior wall, decks shall be positively anchored to the primary structure and designed for both vertical and lateral loads as applicable. (BOLTED)
Posts/piers must bear on undisturbed soils, posts within 3 to 4 foot of house are in backfill area and must be excavated to undisturbed soils. (basement footing depth)
