Bob's Final Update
In the months since I announced my intent to retire, I’ve been busy with my normal duties while also working with the Board of Commissioners and Verna to ensure a smooth transition in the leadership of this incredible organization.

Well, that transition is completed and Verna McDaniel will soon be the Administrator of Washtenaw County. I am extremely confident in her leadership and management abilities, and I have no doubt that she will be successful.
Albeit busy, the intervening months flew by and the time has finally come. Friday is my last day, it’s time to say good bye. This is my final Update, and with it comes a flood of memories and emotions, but also excitement about what the next chapter of my life will bring.
Over the last several weeks I’ve shared my thoughts on various aspects of my role as County Administrator, beginning with my support to the Board of Commissioners followed by my thoughts on organizational improvement and leadership. The final component of my position involves external representation, representing the Board of Commissioners and the organization in the greater community. It has been an honor to represent the Board of Commissioner and this organization, and I think we have much to be proud of.
One of the things that I’m most proud of, however, is our ability to lead and facilitate “systems” change for the better in Washtenaw County. This organization has vision and a commitment to continuous improvement – not just internally but throughout the community. We also have a demonstrated ability to bring community partners together and identify better and more cost effective ways to provide services - whether the services are delivered through County Government, Local Units of Government or Non Profit Organizations. The Blueprint to End Homelessness, The Delonis Center, the Literacy Coalition of Washtenaw County, Ann Arbor SPARK, the Washtenaw Health Plan, WCHO, and the CJCC are just a few examples of what we’ve helped to accomplish.
When I began as County Administrator fifteen years ago, I wanted to change this community for the better. I wanted to make a difference. With the support of the Board of Commissioners and the hard work and dedication from each of you … we have made a difference, we have improved the lives of Washtenaw county residents.
My interest and my heart has always been in public service, and that won’t change. I may be retiring from Washtenaw County Government, but not Washtenaw County. This is a tremendous organization, primarily because of each of you and the County’s culture. Thank you for making my 37 years with Washtenaw County some of the best years of my life.
Bob
