Formerly homeless and addicted, Otho’s story now includes “local hero” as this PORT client recently saved a woman from a burning house near Zingerman’s Deli, where he works in the kitchen.

“I didn’t do anything that anyone wouldn’t do,” say the modest Otho when he, and his story, received a standing ovation at the January Group of 180 where he was introduced by Deputy Administrator David Behen.

Otho left his home in Willow Run at the age of 13, leaving an abusive, alcoholic father the year after his mother died. He spent time in prison and many years on the streets. With help from PORT, the Delonis and the Men’s Shelter before that, Otho grew stronger and more self-sufficient. He has worked for Zingerman’s for nearly five years and heads up two “Dual Diagnosis” Support Groups for CSTS. And two months ago he moved into his own apartment in Ann Arbor.

Otho has put himself in the position to take advantage of programming that helps define the Washtenaw County community.

He is the true proof of positive community impact.
